Towards reliable global allowances for sea level rise

چکیده

Tide gauge data and information from tide, surge ocean models have been used to calculate validate the Gumbel scale parameters of extreme sea level distributions along world coastline. The inclusion model is found result in significantly improved correspondence between observed modelled that obtained using tide alone. so are shown be consistent with findings reported previously, such as assessments Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. However, considerably provision coast means coastal planners, others concerned impacts rise, can now undertake more complete investigations likely increase exceedance frequencies. In addition, engineers will access reliable estimates ‘sea allowances’ needed design defences for protecting populations.

Contemporary sea level rise.

Measuring sea level change and understanding its causes has considerably improved in the recent years, essentially because new in situ and remote sensing observations have become available. Here we report on most recent results on contemporary sea level rise. We first present sea level observations from tide gauges over the twentieth century and from satellite altimetry since the early 1990s. W...

GIS Analysis of Global Impacts from Sea Level Rise

Future sea level rise caused by climate change would disrupt the physical processes, economic activities, and social systems in coastal regions. Based on a hypothetical global sea level increase of one to six meters, we developed GIS methods to assess and visualize the global impacts of potential inundation using the best available global datasets. After susceptible areas were delineated, we es...

A 20th century acceleration in global sea-level rise

[1] Multi-century sea-level records and climate models indicate an acceleration of sea-level rise, but no 20th century acceleration has previously been detected. A reconstruction of global sea level using tide-gauge data from 1950 to 2000 indicates a larger rate of rise after 1993 and other periods of rapid sea-level rise but no significant acceleration over this period. Here, we extend the rec...

Rapid accumulation of committed sea-level rise from global warming.

As carbon emissions and scientific research have accumulated over recent years, climate scientists have come to see global climate change as an increasingly urgent threat (1, 2). In PNAS, Levermann et al. (3) provide a powerful new indicator of danger. When their findings on the long-term sensitivity of global sea level to global warming (∼2.3 m/°C) are put in the context of recent research on ...

How much more global warming and sea level rise?

Two global coupled climate models show that even if the concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere had been stabilized in the year 2000, we are already committed to further global warming of about another half degree and an additional 320% sea level rise caused by thermal expansion by the end of the 21st century. Projected weakening of the meridional overturning circulation in the Nor...
